Why Alice can Dance: The Story of Alice Ball

Alice Ball Profile
Mad Hatter – Chick Corea

In a world that is increasingly being filled with nobles and the notorious; it’s becoming more important to control the narrative and preserve the histories laid down before us. One of the primary reasons African traditions and their legacies are lost today is because it’s preservation was primarily oral. But today through Christ, many of those traditions will be restored; the good things that existed in the past shall be redeemed, while what is vile and worthless shall be tossed away. Now although Christ comes to redeem all, everyone will not receive the message. It’s unfortunate to have to cut off people who simply don’t gel well and then get upset afterwards. Whatever you must do, keep away from falsehoods. Don’t let a lie get to your head Alice.

Leaps over walls

Today I’ll talk a little about Alice Augusta Ball; an African American chemist that came with the most effective treatment for leprosy until the 1940’s. Her innovations in using oil extract to inject into the body was way ahead of her time. In the state of Hawaii, she is the archetype being the first African American to receive a Master’s Degree at the University of Hawaii and the first to become a chemistry professor there.

Alice was born to parents James Presley and Laura Louise (Howard) Ball on July 24, 1892 in Seattle, Washington. James was a newspaper editor, photographer, and a lawyer. Her grandfather James Ball Sr., was also a photographer widely remembered for being the first African American to learn a process of printing photographs onto metals called daguerreotype. See what is done here? Common names will often go through Historical cycles. To suggest otherwise goes against common sense.

ME: Alfred am I lying?
ALFRED: Nope

likes to move

Now Alice and her family moved to Honolulu as a child. They moved back to Seattle after one year. Apparently, the move was to keep Alice’s grandfather, James healthy. The cold in Seattle agitated his arthritis but he eventually died in Hawaii. Alice would return to school and obtain her bachelor’s in pharmaceutical chemistry at the Universal of Washington. Two years later, she would get a second degree in Pharmacy. After studying about Ether solutions, Alice would move back to Hawaii to get her final degree in Chemistry.

In Hawaii, Alice studied chaulmoogra oil and it’s chemical makeups. After discovering its water soluble form, ester ethyl, she was able to make historical discoveries to cure leprosy. She would later study the chemical properties of Piper methysticum which would be used to treat leprosy from 1866 – 1942. Her greatest advocate at the time was Dr. Harry T. Hollman, who being unsatisfied with the results Chaulmoogra oil provides, consulted Alice Ball for her findings in Piper methysticum. Every form of treatment with Chaulmoogra oil presented problems as it gave mixed results. It was first used as a topical directly from the tree as eastern medicine.

It was first used as a topical directly from the tree as eastern medicine.

Unfortunately, it was found too sticky for a topical and too painful as an injection. If used as an injection, blisters would be formed. If ingested, it would cause vomiting due to it’s putrid taste.

Ball’s wisdom allowed her to develop a technique that made chaulmoogra seeds palatable and absorbable by the body. She did this by isolating ethyl ester compounds from their fatty acids. She called it, “The Ball Method” but died before she was able to publish her findings. Arthur L. Dean picked up after her work and continued research, publishing his findings. He renamed the method, “The Dean Method” without giving Ball credit. Thankfully he would eventually get called out for this. The procedure remained the preferred treatment for leprosy until breakthroughs using sulfonamide drugs appeared in the 1940s.

Alice Augusta Ball died on December 31, 1916 at the age of 24. She became ill during her research and returned to Seattle for treatment a few months before her death. The true cause of her death is unknown as her original death certificate was altered stating that the cause of death is tuberculosis.

Vertical points

This story is to commend a woman who made significant impact on people who suffered from leprosy; and to show how often Black History is treated as lice; what effect of erasure and ignorance has on the psyche, as if leeches are eating away at memories. The Good News is that it doesn’t have to be this way; the spirit of Alice continues on today doesn’t it? And there are sure fire ways now to cure the toughest of diseases; His Word. And as we feast on His Truth like little maggots we’ll find greater freedom, greater knowledge, greater healing than what we are accustomed to.

ME: Isn’t that write Alfred?
ALFRED: If God says so.

Did God say so? You see, certain things don’t have to be difficult. It’s simple once you learn how to commune. It’s no secret as to how eager God wants to restore His people. The question is: are we willing to reposition ourselves?

Questions to Consider:

  • You may not be a chemist, but you are always combining solutions with your thoughts, words, and actions. What formulas could you test to bring about healing in your life and those around you?
  • How self-sufficient are you? In what ways are you dependent on others?
  • What ways can you learn to control the narrative in your own life.
  • In what ways can we ‘write away injustice’? Are the correlations between ‘personal policies’ and politics?

Happy New Years ya’ll. Have you been able to crack a smile during the madness? For those who have been praying for me and my family, thank you. We’re finding more ways to be thankful and to walk in the joy of Christ. And to the parents behind making that Batman game, I apologize for the mess. Know that we received word to exit from Deus Ex.

I can tell you as one who is relearning what it means to love again there are things that I must cut out in 2021. – The Prototype

N Unsafe Base

Any healthy relationship will have a give and take, an ebb and flow, ups and downs. Mutual humility and submission will happen within reason. It’s one thing to compromise for the sake of peace.  It’s another when you are compromised without consent. Do you know how difficult it’s been for me perceiving what’s been going on with my brothers and sisters? ‘Bee”ing able to empathize and make a deep connection with others is the mark of a true sensei.

Maybe it was reaffirming that God will eventually bring everything to the light. Maybe it was when I started posting letters I wrote to myself as a form of instruction. Perhaps it was when I openly discussed Black Ownership over social media. Whatever the case was, it drew so much unwarranted attention to me offline. I say offline because people typically didn’t react tangibly to my posts. When I first discovered that my emails were compromised, I suspected it as merely a spiritual thing. Of course, there are few of us that enjoy true Fellowship of the Spirit. I do not mind you peering into my heart as we share a bond that lasts forever. I love every one of you including you noble one, although you get on my nerves sometimes.

But once I found out my emails were being sent to government authorities, even to people I know within my circle – without my consent- that meant war.

So, if we will apply the golden rule to our lives (no not the capitalist rule) we would do well to treat others the way we want to be treated. No backbiting, spreading slander, or sabotaging. Do we have an understanding?

NR Peace

If I never experienced the oneness that Christianity speaks of in the Bible, I couldn’t be a Christian. And for those who would say that I should just blindly trust in God I’m going to humbly say that you lack prudence as many people have been compromised, taken advantage of, and lied to on the basis of ‘blind faith’.

I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. Jn 17:23 ESV

A basic overview of the study of knowledge is that a belief is formed by perception and is tested and validated as it is referenced by others. While arbiters are used to distinguish facts from half-truths, even objectivity must be called into question when exploring possibilities. The truth is we are now in a world where we are heavily surveilled; there are few secrets, little to no privacy, and constant bombardment of stimuli to manipulate people. If you didn’t figure this out already Christian, we have been in Babylon for a long time.

Three Ways to Find Inner Peace

When the world becomes chaotic around you, it can be easy to become anxious, irritated, or depressed. Here are three ways to regain serenity.

Meditation
  1. Practice Meditation: Get to your safe place where it is quiet. Quiet yourself, breathe, pray.
  2. Be Content: Whether you’ve accomplished much or not at all, whether you’ve gained or lost things, be content with what you have. Be grateful and be detached from the world for many things in this life is temporary.
  3. Make works of art: Whether that is in music, dance, poetry, or illustration, art can bring you to a place of tranquility.

For us as Christians, we’re taught to find perfect peace in Jesus. He’s the ultimate source of all protection; our refuge, and when no one else regards us, he will.

This is important as we’re still wandering through the desert areas. And as we’re looking for the wedding of the spiritual church with it’s heavenly body we must prepare ourselves and put away everything that is not of His nature. This includes all heresies, false accusations, ungodliness etc. The united church can have denominations by name, but not in essence. The time will come when the Catholics and Protestants will be reconciled to Christ and no longer condemn the other for tenets that are partially true.

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into Christ Himself, who is the head. Eph 4:15

Electric Eels

Researchers say that 2021 will have a pandemic of mental illness. I would have to agree with all the trauma of the past 4 years – including the breach of Capitol Hill – will leave a dramatic effect on the psyche for years to come. We shouldn’t dismiss the fact that there are twisted minds out there that takes pleasure in seeing others suffer. And as the pandemic ensues and our Economy is shaken; as our Democracy is on the brink of failure, I exhort you by the grace of God to stay sober and keep your head above water. It’s too easy to drown in the cares of this world with all of its troubles and sorrows.

So, for those who have found themselves at their breaking point; who are lost and feel like there’s no point in return; for those who are at their last breath, at wits end; those who are cornered to the wall, if you feel like you have lost all hope please know that I have extended my heart towards you. I know it means little sense I am expressing my feelings through words, but I hope that you could accept them if they can bring healing. O Darling, can’t you see that there is a greater heart behind mine? God loves you with a Divine love; a love so powerful he would rearrange the heavens for you just so you know that he cares. A love so thoughtful that he would guide you and take care of your every need. Our hearts may fail and may be faint in feeling for now. However, I believe that as we heal, we will birth a greater power in pure love like never before.

D in EngravD

Certainly we are in dark times as death looms among us. Mercy seems to be lost as the death sentence looms in our country. Many are dying due to lack of sensitivity and care, not necessarily through political judgement. Nevertheless we’ve experienced relief in the defeat of our current administration – especially – in the recent ban of Donald Trump from social media. Now the banning of Donald Trump gives off feelings of bad precedents and with good reasons. May my insights in Hermeneutics and Deontology serve as assurance that banning Donald Trump was indeed the right decision.

Why Donald Trump and Trumpism ought to be banned

I’m no political expert so those pundits that are certified check the accuracy of my claims. The breach on Capitol Hill and the banning of Donald Trump are two big blows to our Democracy. It proved that laws in and of themselves cannot guarantee order any more than elected officials can guarantee justice. This doesn’t mean that we have the license to do as we please or give in to lawlessness, rather it gives us the incentive to be determined to make our world better and beautiful for everyone involved.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. 1st Amendment U.S Constitution

People who tend to side on the opinion that speech should never be censored tend to look at this amendment apart from the whole Constitution.

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. Preamble U.S Constitution [Emphasis added]

My take on this if we will consolidate both passages is that freedom of speech and the press is designed bring about unity, justice, and peace. When we have perpetrators of those who undermine authority and the press (although fake news does exist), who illegitimizes government and the people it should serve, who favors the privileged while oppressing the unfortunate, I believe there’s a moral responsibility to check individuals by constitutional mandate. Otherwise we should make no complaints to injustice and allow anarchy or autocracy to arise.

There are two criticisms I want to address in advance:

  1. Freedom of speech should be allowed to be free no matter how obscene or hateful

AND

  • Christians should not get involved with these matters as they are merely worldly and will pass away.

I find the people in the 1st camp to be very hypocritical as they conveniently subscribe to that opinion when it serves their feelings of superiority or when they dislike or hate someone else. Because when it really comes down to it, they don’t exercise free speech; they lack the bandwidth to understand all the connotations that comes along with freedom; the lack the vocabulary to exercise free speech; furthermore, they don’t talk crazy when they are at their job, or talking to authorities, or when trying to win business; because relationships are built around TRUST and RESPECT. There are consequences when you speak a certain way in some circumstances (at least for some people). For some whites, they enjoy the privilege of being a spoiled prick in which their forwardness comes with NO repercussions no matter how much damage they’ve caused.

AND

To my Christian family,

There seems to be a false dichotomy when it comes to Christian living between holiness and worldliness. While we want to be separate from the unrighteous and unclean, we must do so without denying Christ in the process. If we will continue to assert Christ’s Immanence and Omnipresence, we will remember who created all these things knowing that {Christ is all, and in all}. Do not forget those who are growing up in their roles in the Church and their purpose in receiving gifts from heaven. Neither should we forget to hope of Jesus’ prayer before he was crucified. I write these words to you and I hope you will see from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Be blessed.

With Ever Growing Love,

James

The Black Gene

There’s no reason to repeat that the Constitution was not intended for Blacks. We were brought to the US as slaves. What are we willing to say about ourselves? Will we continue to consent to misleading Historical narratives, or will we try to Revision History by fulfilling it through Eternal Life? For over 200 years, my stories of my Black family have been blotted out to debase our significance, worth, and rank. Can you image? Centuries of our faces painted with dung, refuse, mud; all the things that men deem to be worthless. But no matter how others may look at my people, they will never destroy who we really are; men and women Imago Dei.
